Obituary for Vengie Monroe

Mrs. Louvenia Mae “Vengie” Monroe, age 95, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Monday, April 30, 2018 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was born on July 30, 1923 in Glasgow, Mo., a daughter of the late Romeo and Sadie (Thomas) McKenzie. She was married on December 23, 1947 in Marshall, Mo. to Harry Edward Monroe who preceded her in death on August 29, 2004.

A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Vengie was a 1941 graduate of Glasgow High School.

Vengie and Harry co-owned Casey-Lenox Funeral Home in St. Clair, Mo. from 1968-1978 and later co-owned the Riverview Motel in Hermann, Mo. from 1979 to 1988.

While living in St. Clair, she was a past matron of the Eastern Star Chapter 96 and a member of the Rebeccas of St. Clair.. After moving to Jefferson City, she was a past member of the Capital City Christian Church.

Vengie was the foundation that her family built their lives around. She instilled in them the importance of family values and unconditional love.

Vengie was an avid Missouri sports fan cheering on the Cardinals, Blues and Mizzou teams.

Survivors include: her sons, John Monroe and his wife Sarah of Jefferson City, Mo., and James Monroe of Holts Summit, Mo.; her grandson, Derek Monroe and his wife Jessica of Jefferson City, Mo.; two great-grandsons, Nicholas and Elijah Monroe; a step-great-granddaughter, Madison Behrens; and numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Bill McKenzie and her sister, Trudy Tichenor.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 11:00 until 12:00 pm Thursday, May 3, 2018.

A funeral service will be conducted at 12:00 pm Thursday, May 3, 2018 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Bart Tichenor officiating. Graveside services will follow at Linn Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Children’s Home Society of Missouri, 1167 Corporate Lake Drive, St. Louis, MO 63132.
