Obituary for Anna Mae Schmitz

Anna Mae Schmitz, age 87, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on March 21, 2023, at SSM – St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was born on March 17, 1936 in Osage Bend, Mo., the daughter of Hugo Joseph and Clara Mary (Veit) Schmutzler. She was married on January 27, 1962 in Jefferson City, Mo. to Richard Herbert Schmitz. Richard joined Anna Mae in heaven on Saturday, March 25, 2023, four days after her passing.

She attended school in Osage Bend then went to work for Woolworth’s 5 and Dime and later worked various factory positions with companies such as McGraw Edison and Maytag. Her most notable title, however, was homemaker. She enjoyed being home tending to her house and caring for her husband and four sons.

Anna Mae was quite the holiday host and was a wonderful cook – always enjoying filling her home with her family. She was blessed to spend many years babysitting for her grandchildren and loved every minute. She was very artistic and used her talents to craft, sew and paint, activities she enjoyed doing with her grandchildren, along with reading them books. Anna Mae was a gardener, working many hours in her vegetable garden and flower beds. While outside, she also liked to watch the squirrels and birds, her favorite being bluebirds. In her free time, she enjoyed listening to classic country music, watching her favorite television shows, and doing puzzles.

Anna Mae was a parishioner of St. Peters Catholic Church.

Survivors include: her sons, Kevin Schmitz (Janice), Randall Schmitz (Tracey), Dennis Schmitz (Kathleen), and Steven Schmitz (Chrystal); her sister-in-law, Irene Schmutzler; grandchildren, Jacob Schmitz, Jackson Schmitz, Emily Schmitz, Jennifer Brader (Jonathan), Nicole Stattman (Scott), Bradley Schmitz, Stacy Beck (Kenny), Amber Ewing (Jamey), Trista Ewing (Marc), Matthew Schmitz and Evan Schmitz; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Anna Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, George Schmutzler, Albert Schmutzler, Leonard Schmutzler, Rosemary Wolf and Betty Lou Rustemeyer; and a granddaughter, Chrissy Ewing.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 27, 2023 at Freeman Mortuary.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2023 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend I.C. Medina officiating. Graveside services and interment will follow at St. Margaret of Antioch Catholic Church Cemetery in Osage Bend, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Special Learning Center at 1115 Fairgrounds Road, Jefferson City, Mo. 65109.
