Obituary for Barb Herman

Barbara Annette Herman, age 84, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away peacefully, Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at her home. She was surrounded by a family of relatives and lifelong friends.

Barbara was born on December 28, 1939 in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph Israel and Lena (Shustoreman) Snitz. She was married on June 25, 1961, to Allen Isaac Herman, who survives her. Barbara was known as “My Woman of Valor” to her husband, Ema or Bubbe to many, and friend to countless others.

Growing up in Kansas, Barbara graduated from Wichita High School East in 1957. She went on to spend two years each, studying at Wichita State and the University of Missouri.

After marrying Allen and moving to Jefferson City, Barbara ran the bridal department for their family business, Herman’s Department Store. She worked there for thirty years, until the store’s closing in 1991. She went on to work in the offices of several healthcare practices where her care and love for people shone through.

Barbara was a pillar of the Temple Beth-El community in Jefferson City as well as a member and past president of the Beth-El Sisterhood. She touched many young lives in the congregation over the course of four decades, including teaching Hebrew to multiple generations of children for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.

Constantly involved in charity work with organizations such as the Samaritan Center and part of social groups such as the Cultured Pearls and Bunco, her true passion was always people.

Survivors include: her husband of 63 years, Allen Herman; a son, Mitchell Howard Herman (Sybil) of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.; her sister, Sharon Smith (Leonard) of St. Louis, Mo.; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Roberta Herman of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Survivors also include the following families whom she loved and embraced as her own: The Kovar family of Ann, Samuel, Mary Katherine, and Peter; the Alberts family of Rodger, Joy, and Emily McMichael.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joshua Eric Herman; and James Paul Kovar.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery Thursday, February 29, 2024.
