Obituary for Betty Jean Cardwell

Ms. Betty Jean Cardwell, age 92, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by family.

She was born on May 2, 1928 in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of the late Vincent B. and Bessie L. (Winegar) Gangwish. She was married to Doyce C. Cardwell, and to this union, their three children were born.

A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Betty was a graduate of Jefferson City High School.

Betty worked in retail sales. She worked at The Purple Shop, Saffees, Kaiser’s Jewelry, Seifert’s and Dillard’s. She retired young and traveled throughout Europe and the United States.

Betty enjoyed reading, decorating, and going to the movies. Most of all, she cherished the time she spent with her family, especially seeing her grandchildren. Some of her favorite memories were Christmas and Thanksgiving where she prepared the meals with her family.

A woman of faith, Betty was a long-time member of St. Peter Interparish. She was also a volunteer at SSM Health St. Mary’s gift shop.

Survivors include: two daughters, Kathy Vache (James) of Jefferson City, Mo., and Jody Williams (Sam) of Jefferson City, Mo; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Michele Hill; and ex-husband, Doyce.

Private family services will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
