Obituary for Betty Jean Reynolds

Betty Jean Reynolds, age 89 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at River City Living Community surrounded by family.

She was born on January 27, 1931 in Mark Tree, Ark. the daughter of Jonah and Goldie (Smith) Tombs. She was married on October 27, 1946 in Parthenon, Ark. to Rex Reynolds who preceded her in death on January 3, 2002.

Betty grew up during the depression era and learned the value of hard work. She was employed in various positions in the Jefferson City after moving to the Central Missouri area with her husband. She began working with McGraw-Edison for ten years and then went on to work for Chesebrough Ponds, Von Hoffman and Westinghouse. She later retired from the Department of Revenue as a clerk and worked part time at Summit Villa Lifecare.

She was a strong woman of faith and a charter member of Solid Rock Family Church. Betty cherished her church involvement and never missed weekly prayer meeting.

Betty cherished time with her children and grandchildren; attending every sporting event and was the family’s number one fan. She also loved being outdoors, especially fishing, or a family vacation to Arkansas. She was skilled with a crochet needle and the family will always enjoy her many creations. Within all these facets of her life, she fostered and cherished each and every one. To Betty, there was no greater gift than the love of family.

Survivors include: her two sons, Doyle Reynolds (wife Beth) of Foley, Al. and George Reynolds (wife Sandy) of Holts Summit, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Reynolds of Holts Summit, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Tombs of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 55 years, Rex; one son, Wayne Reynolds, who passed away in 1997; two brothers, Tom Tombs and Harry Tombs; one sister, Judy Schnauth; two grandsons, Chris Reynolds and Mark Bentlage; one granddaughter, Sloane Reynolds; and one daughter-in-law, Darlene Reynolds.

A special thanks to Nona, Shelah, Norma, Juanita and friends at Hyder Apartments for years of friendship, companionship and fellowship. The many times they spent together were a true blessing.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private funeral service will be conducted Saturday, May 23, 2020 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Michael Koelling and the Reverend Joe Skiles officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

A webcast of the funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2020 for friends to view by going to her memorial page on Freeman Mortuary’s website. Friends may mail sympathy cards to the funeral home or leave condolences online to be given to her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Solid Rock Family Church or Hospice Compassus.
