Obituary for Carla D. Welch

Carla Denise Welch, age 66, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020.

She was born on March 2, 1954 in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of James and Marjorie (Korsmeyer) Lutkewitte. A lifelong resident of Mid-Missouri, Carla graduated from Jefferson City High School. She later worked for the Missouri Department of Revenue in taxation for nearly 40 years, retiring in 2010. She lived on a farm in Lohman, Missouri for nearly 45 years.

Carla was a city girl by birth, but a farm girl at heart. She had a passion for exploration. It was her mission to be a world traveler. Carla accomplished this by visiting almost all 50 states, including Alaska and enjoying trips to Mexico, Canada, Turkey, Jordan, Israel and many European countries. One of her fondest memories was a trip to visit her son in Chicago where they experienced the Chicago Gangster Tour and enjoyed all the fine food and activities that the city has to offer. She had a giving spirit and often volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. Carla loved to nurture her flower and vegetable gardens, work on puzzles, go bowling and dancing and take long drives with the car top down. She was a sun lover – whenever possible, she would be soaking up the rays around the pool, on the beach, working in her gardens or simply relaxing on her patio overlooking the farm. Carla was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan (frequently attending home games) and liked to sew, crochet, and bake along with having an eye for decorating. Most of all, she was a great mom. Carla was a one of a kind, free spirit who did things her own way. She was non-judgmental and accepting of everyone. She was kind, supportive and encouraging. Her son will miss their Saturday morning shopping rituals, her special popcorn balls and their frequent one-on-one lunches and dinners where they would spend time catching up on their adventures and talking about life.

Survivors include her son, Shea Welch of Chicago, Illinois; her mother, Marjorie Lutkewitte of Jefferson City, Mo; her sisters, Carol Atchison of Jefferson City, Barbara Bosch (Chris) of Jefferson City, Donna Lutkewitte (Dale) of Seattle, Washington, and Linda Lindsey (Mike) of Jefferson City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carla was preceded in death by her father, James Lutkewitte.
