Obituary for Catherine Cecelia Reed

Mrs. Catherine Cecelia (Kloeppel) Reed, age 93, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Villa Marie.

Catherine was born on September 3, 1927 in Freeburg, Mo., a daughter of Conrad and Dora (Bauer) Kloeppel. She was married on February 12, 1949 in Freeburg, Mo. to John W. Reed, Sr. who preceded her in death on October 22, 2008.

For 22 years, she traveled with her husband John, who served three tours in the military, throughout Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, and Germany. When they settled back in Missouri, Catherine worked for Chesebrough Ponds as a machine operator for 20 years.

A woman of faith, Catherine was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral. When she was no longer able to attend church, she still watched mass every week and prayed the rosary.

Catherine loved traveling with her family, seeing different parts of the United States and Germany. She was a talented cook and in her younger years, she canned different vegetables. She was also known for her pies, especially her coconut and chocolate cream pie, which were always requested at family gatherings. She liked doing crossword puzzles, playing dominos, and other games with her family. To Catherine, family was everything and she cherished the time that she spent with them. She even made handmade embroidered quilts for each of her grandchildren.

Survivors include: seven children, John W. Reed, Jr. (Prudence) of Jefferson City, Mo., David L. Reed (Dianne) of Brazito, Mo., Judy Kay Smith of Jefferson City, Mo., Debbie Sessler (John) of Auxvasse, Mo., Sandy Nichols of Jefferson City, Mo., Randy Reed of Columbia, Mo., and Bob Reed of Jefferson City, Mo; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband; her parents; 11 brothers and sisters; son, James Reed; daughter, Ruthie Reed; grandson, John W. “Jay” Reed III; and granddaughter, Kathi Ann Smith.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Monday, March 22, 2021.

Funeral services will be held in the Freeman Chapel at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 22, 2021 with Deacon Ray Purvis officiating. Graveside services will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Cathedral.
