Obituary

Charleen E. Newman of Jefferson City, MO, age 87, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2019 at Capital Region Medical Center.

She was born July 28, 1932 in Jackson, MO, the daughter of the late Elmer H. Luehring and Elizabeth L. (Lishman) Luehring.

On August 23, 1953 in Cape Girardeau, MO, she married Charles A. Newman who predeceased her on December 31, 2016.

Charleen graduated from College High School, Cape Girardeau in 1950. She graduated from the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing, St. Louis, MO in 1953. She began a long and distinguished career as a registered nurse working initially at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO.

After raising her two sons, she was employed by the American Red Cross and worked the blood mobile at various locations in mid-Missouri for five years. Later she volunteered as a nurse for the Cole County Health Department from 1978 -1997.

She was member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1965. She volunteered there as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was a member of the Circle Six.

Charleen enjoyed traveling with her late husband Charles. She collected pencils from many locations around the country and world. She gave programs to groups based on her extensive pencil collection. She was a member of the American Pencil Collectors Society and attended national conventions. For the past six years, Charleen was part of the Heisinger Bluffs community where she enjoyed time with residents, bingo and drums alive. She cherished most, however, the time and love that she shared abundantly with her family, especially her three granddaughters.

Survivors include two sons, Stephen G. Newman (wife Tammy) of Jefferson City and Daniel A. Newman of St. Louis, MO, three granddaughters, Jessie, Rachel and Mary Grace Newman and numerous nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews.

My deepest sympathies to Steve and Charleen's entire family who will miss her. She was a wonderful nurse, friendly neighbor, and always let the Lord's light shine through her to touch the lives of those around her. I always enjoyed seeing her and freely talking with her whenever I would come back to Jefferson City. She will be missed.

Dear Steve & Dan--
I'm sorry to hear about your mom's passing. I enjoyed reading about her life. We've lost some important role models this last week or more from our boyhood on the Leslie Blvd. corridor--your mom, Lorna, & Ms. Arthur.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers.
