Obituary for Charles Baker Oesterly

Charles Baker “Chuck” Oesterly, age 85, of Jefferson City, went to start his glorious home with the Lord on Tuesday, August 2, 2022.

Charles was born on September 30, 1936, in California, Mo. he was the third son of Walter and Lorene (Baker) Oesterly, who preceded him in death. Charles’ middle name was his mother’s maiden name. He resided in Moniteau County at the old home place, south of California, near the Twin Bridges. He lived there until he married Martha Marie Glass on September 17, 1960.

Charles was raised on the family farm four miles south of California, Mo. He went to grade school at Rock Island School, a rural one room school in Moniteau County. He was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical and Reformed Church of California, Mo. and then later graduated from California High School in 1954. Charles completed Junior College in Jefferson City.

He worked in various positions with the Department of Transportation for 40 years. Charles began his employment in the survey and planning department and retired in 1994 from their design and construction department. He stayed close with many of his colleagues after retirement and even hosted chili dinners for them on occasion.

After going to work for the Department of Transportation, he started coaching softball teams. When his son, Kevin, turned nine, Charles started coaching him in Little League. Charles became the president of the Babe Ruth League in 1977 and was the president until the ball park was sold in 2014. The ball park was named Charles B. Oesterly stadium on July 20, 1986.

Charles enjoyed being outdoors as much as possible. He could often be found planting flowers in his garden, feeding animals and most of all, fishing on “Lake PaPa” with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling to New Orleans and the Smoky Mountains with his wife. Most of all, he cherished the time that he spent with his family and friends. He will be most remembered for always being there when you needed him, and endlessly spoiling his grandchildren.

Charles is survived by: his loving wife of 61 years, Martha; one son, Kevin W. Oesterly, of Tebbetts, Mo.; daughter, Laura A. Lamberta (Charles), of Columbia Mo; three grandchildren, Sarah Oesterly of Springfield, Mo., Alexander Oesterly of Jefferson City and Annabelle Lamberta of Columbia, Mo; two sisters-in-law Margaret Oesterly and Mary Oesterly from California, Mo.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lorene; and his three brothers, Paul, Ronald, and Gary; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Oesterly.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2022.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 5, 2022 with his niece, Brenda Oesterly and his brother-in-law, Joe Dawson officiating. Graveside services and inurnment will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.
