Obituary for Cheryl Saunier

Cheryl Lynn Saunier, age 52, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Monday, December 14, 2020 at Capital Region Medical Center surrounded by her family.

She was born on May 12, 1968 in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Frank Henry and Margaret Ellen Vanderburg Saunier.

A lifelong resident of central Missouri, Cheryl was a 1988 graduate of Jefferson City High School where she was a member of the High School Pep Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she enjoyed attending the Saturday night service with her parents.

If you knew Cheryl, you were greeted with a big smile. She would listen to you and enjoy the time spent with you. When it was time to leave, you were most likely given a big hug and told “Love you” instead of goodbye. Cheryl worked as a caregiver at the YMCA daycare for a few years but spent most of her time volunteering at Capital Region Medical Center. She also spent many hours at the Jefferson City Animal Shelter visiting with the animals that needed love and attention while waiting for a good home.

Cheryl met the love of her life, Doug Schulte, in 2001 and she treasured his companionship for nearly 20 years. They both resided at Estes Independent Living Apartments and enjoyed spending time with each other every day, visiting, listening to music, watching baseball games and going to the movies or to concerts. Her extended family included friends at the apartment and their staff. With Estes, she did her own shopping, went bowling on Monday nights, took day trips to the Lake, to Columbia, with trips to the St. Louis Zoo and Cardinals games. As a group they celebrated birthdays, holidays, and enjoyed barbeques. The Estes family gave her so much love and support.

Family and friends were always the center of Cheryl’s life. Her favorite memories were with them: cheering on the Cardinal’s with her Dad, ceramics classes with her grandmother and Mom, or playing with her niece and nephew. When she was younger, she spent a week every summer at Camp Wonderland making new friends. As she grew older, she found a love for travel and got to see many places including Yellowstone and Disney World. She went on many trips to both Branson and Nashville for live country music. Some of her favorite family trips were to her brother’s wedding in Jamaica and to Orange Beach, Alabama for her 50th birthday.

Due to some of her health issues from Spina Bifida, Cheryl spent many days throughout her life at the University of Missouri Medical Center and received amazing care during her time there. She had lifelong friendships with her nurses and doctors and the family will always remember the love shown to their family.

Survivors include: her parents, Frank and Margaret Saunier of Jefferson City, Mo.; her brother, Brett Saunier of Lake St. Louis, MO; his wife Lyndsey; her beloved nephew and niece, Ty and Norah Saunier; her companion and the love of her life, Doug Schulte; uncle, Louis Saunier of Linn, Mo.; aunt, Rose Ann Leivian of Jefferson City, Mo.; numerous cousins; and so many friends.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Frank and Kate Saunier; her maternal grandparents, Lawrence and Doris Vanderburg; and an aunt, Mary Ann Hayes.

Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2020. The general public is welcome to attend the visitation and required to wear protective masks while in attendance.
