Obituary for Elmer H. Castrop

Elmer H. Castrop, age 89, formerly of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Monday, January 17, 2022, at his home in Willard, Mo.

He was born on November 4, 1932 in Westphalia, Mo., the son of George and Mamie (Schmitz) Castrop. He was married on June 23, 1968 in Jefferson City, Mo. to Joyce Ivana Hopkins, who preceded him in death on May 7, 2016.

Elmer grew up in the Westphalia area and attended Fatima High School. While he was younger, he worked at the Maries Valley chicken hatchery in Westphalia, Mo. and often told stories of that job. Shortly after high school, Elmer proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Elmer was employed with the Central Dealers Wholesale Building and for Ameren B.P. for more than 30 years until he retired at the age of 75.

He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City, Mo. and helped serve as a deacon. Since he moved to Willard, Mo. a few years ago, Elmer transferred his membership to Trinity Pentecostal Church in Springfield, Mo.

Elmer loved his family dearly, especially his soul mate of 47 years, Joyce. They were inseparable and shared so many common interests. They both had a huge passion for cats and always had a cat or four around their home. Elmer enjoyed watching sports and cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs. Recently, he cherished time watching his great-children play sports. In November, Elmer traveled to Florida for the National Championship of the NHFA in which he got to watch his great-grandson become a national champion.

Survivors include: two brothers, Hank Castrop (wife, Betty) of Wardsville, Mo., and Ed Castrop (wife, Barbara) of Oakland, Tennessee; three step-children, Charles Andrew “Drew” Bailey (wife, Phyllis) of Troy, Il., Thomas Bailey of Jefferson City, Mo., and Rita Sanderson (husband Doug) of Willard, Mo.; ten grandchildren, John Bailey, Janet Alexander, Jeremy Bailey, Shawn Motlagh, Amy Sanderson, Jenifer Duncan, Margaret Sherman, LaVern Sanderson, Lara Porter and Aylah Sanderson; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Joyce; and his siblings, Alfred Castrop, Martin Castrop, Mary Castrop, Helen Stratman, and Julie Vella.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at Trinity Pentecostal Church in Springfield, Mo. A Celebration of Elmer’s Life and military honors will be rendered immediately following the visitation at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with the Reverend Hunter Wells officiating. A meal will follow the service.

Graveside services and interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Riverview Cemetery in Jefferson City, Mo.
