Obituary for Fred H. Lowrance

Fred H. Lowrance, age 81, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Monday, April 10, 2023, at Capital Region Medical Center.

Fred was born on April 1, 1942, in Golden City, Mo., the son of George Walter and Opal May (Ambler) Lowrance.

He grew up in Golden City, Mo., and was a 1959 graduate of Lamar High School, which he attended because of the school's excellent music program. Fred was an accomplished clarinetist at a young age and received a music scholarship from the prestigious Juilliard School.

While attending Julliard, he met Etsko Tazaki. They were united in marriage, and were blessed with a son, George Newman Lowrance.

Fred was a professional musician playing in the Symphony Nova Scotia, in Canada, the New Jersey Symphony and the Orlando Philharmonic. Through hard work and dedication, he worked his way to the first chair role in many of these symphonies. He also toured extensively with the Bolshoi Ballet Company when they visited the U.S. Unfortunately, health issues forced Fred to retire from playing professionally in 1971. He moved back to Golden City, Mo., where he took over his family’s business, a local general store. In 1983 he began work with Key Industries as a travelling clothing salesman. It was during this time in 1990 he moved to Jefferson City, Mo., to be closer to family. His last job was as a caregiver at Cole County Residential Services. He considered this the most rewarding job of his life.

Music was his passion. He would practice five hours a day or more and shared his skills and enthusiasm by teaching several students the clarinet. He cherished his time with the Columbia Symphony and the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra.

Fred was an avid sports fan and coached many of Newman’s teams as he was growing up. He was a proud Kansas City Chiefs season ticket holder for many years and loved attending games with family members. He also appreciated time outdoors and looked forward to time fishing around central Missouri.

Fred truly had a servant’s heart. Known for putting others first, he will be remembered for his generosity and always being in good spirits. His huge smile, happy demeanor and infectious laughter will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include: his loving son, G. Newman Lowrance of Overland Park, Ks.; two grandchildren, Jordan Lowrance and Austin Lowrance; two siblings, John Lowrance of Jefferson City, Mo., and Lana Lowrance of Verona, Mo.; two nephews, Nathan Lowrance of Jefferson City, Mo., and Andrew Lowrance of Chicago, Ill.; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Heidi Lowrance.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 16, 2023.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 104384, Jefferson City, MO 65110.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary, 915 Madison St, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
