Mr. Glendall Dean “Glen” Stout, age 93, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on Sunday, November 8, 2020 at Capital Region Medical Center.
Glen was born on July 3, 1927 in Carterville, Il., the son of the late Melvin and Audria Jones Stout. He was married on June 14, 1953 in Cape Girardeau to Doris Mae Nitsch.
A lifelong worker, he started at a young age delivering newspapers and mowing lawns, and was a butcher at a grocery store. Glen hunted small game to supplement family meals, selling any extra game for a dime or a quarter during the Great Depression.
Glen was drafted for military service while attending Central High School in Cape Girardeau where he graduated from in December of 1945. In World War II, he was a PFC in the Army where he trained as a machine gunner before being stationed at the Mid-Pacific Headquarters, Fort Schafter, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was an assistant and courier for General Hull where his roles included sending and receiving teletype messages (as the sole means of quick communication with the Continental U.S.), updating Army rules and regulation manuals, and guarding secret files about the Nuclear program. After the war, Glen served 5 years in the Missouri National Guard, achieving the rank of Sergeant.
Glen received his B.A. in Business in 1950 from Southeast Missouri State University where he met his future wife in a typing class. During and after college, he worked a variety of jobs including Kroger Grocery Store Clerk, and St. Louis bank teller where he frequently served several Cardinals baseball players including Stan Musial. He also repossessed for a credit loan company, and worked in sales at Goodyear and Johnson’s Wax, all before working for 36 years at the Social Security Administration. As a field representative stationed at the Jefferson City office, he interviewed applicants in rural communities and even notorious criminals at the Missouri State Penitentiary, and hosted a couple Sunday morning radio programs about Social Security on local stations.
Glen was a man of faith. He was a lifelong Christian and member of the First United Methodist Church in Jefferson City since 1960. There, he volunteered in many capacities including Pastor-Parish Committee, Finance Committee, United Methodist Men, Wednesday Morning Men’s Prayer Group, and Fresh Start. He was also a member and occasional class leader of the Harmony Sunday School Class. He volunteered within the community including Capital Region Medical Center Volunteer, Life Line installer, Seniors Driver Education Instructor, Meals on Wheels delivery, and founding board member of Learning in Retirement at Lincoln University. Early in life, Glen was a Boy Scout and an adult leader. Glen and his wife served as youth leaders at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau before moving to Jefferson City.
Glen and Doris were members of the Mid-Mo Campers Club and traveled extensively in their RV throughout most of the United States. They also traveled to several foreign countries. Their favorite trip was to Egypt and the Holy Land. Although he loved to travel, for 26 years, Glen managed to be present on Monday mornings to count money from church collections.
