Mrs. Helen Mae Pfenenger, 91, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at Adams Street Place with family by her side.

She was born on March 24, 1928 in New Bloomfield, Mo. a daughter of the late Jesse and Hattie (Blythe) Peterson. She was married on November 12, 1949 in Jefferson City to William “Bud” Pfenenger, who preceded her in death on April 10, 1983.

A lifelong resident of central Missouri, Helen graduated from New Bloomfield High School. She was employed for over 15 years with Safeway Grocery Store, retiring in 1974.
She was fortunate to work in an industry that she loved. Helen’s love for nourishing others, evident in her years of working in food services, continued in her retirement years. Helen continued to work in food service in cafeterias at Jefferson City Public Schools, Memorial Hospital, Scholastic and Unilever. She was such a warm and loving person, and was well known and loved by students, faculty, and coworkers.

Helen was a member of the Auxillary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2693, the American Legion Auxillary, Unit 5, and the Miller County VFW Post 2442 Auxillary. She also enjoyed cooking, especially for family gatherings; dancing, word search puzzles, adult coloring, Nascar Racing and most of all, spoiling her grandkids.

Survivors include: her daughters, Debbie Schaefer (friend, Gerald Altheuser) of Tebbetts, Mo., and Connie Schoen of Jefferson City, Mo.; step-children, John Pfenenger (Donna) of Windsor, Mo. and Nancy Dilger (Harold) of Corpus Christy, Texas; six grandchildren, Steve Schaefer (Becky), Michael Schaefer (Laura), Randy Schaefer (Staci), Michelle Lepper (Nathan), Debbie Cook and Lisa Pfenenger; and twelve great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was also preceded in death by her siblings: Jesse Peterson Sr., Clayton Peterson, Claude Peterson, Blanche Wolf, Gladys “Pug” Edwards, Edythe Hartley, and Loren Martin.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 9:00 until 11:00 am Friday, November 1, 2019. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend John Frank Pfenenger officiating. Graveside services will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be given to Halo Jefferson City.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

Debbie and Connie: So sorry to hear of Helen’s passing. Have such great memories of her at Capital Speedway. She was definitely a Nascar fan, loved to talk about the races every time I saw her. She was a very special lady, you are in our thoughts and prayers and have our deepest sympathy! Hugs to you both and your families.
