Obituary for Herschel Lee Brooks

Mr. Herschel Lee Brooks, Sr., age 74, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born May 9, 1945 in Bunker Hill, Illinois a son of the late Clarence and Ora Bell (Quinn) Brooks. The family settled in Clarkton, Mo. where he attended school.

Herschel married Jane M. Schetzler on January 8, 1990 in Jefferson City, Mo., where they raised their five children.

He was employed as a cook with Kentucky Fried Chicken for several years until ill health forced his retirement. Previously, he had worked on a farm and in construction. In his free time, he enjoyed buying and selling cars.

Herschel cherished time with his family; especially fishing, working on cars with his children, and telling them about the “good ole days”. He enjoyed watching westerns and keeping up with family through Facebook. Herschel will be remembered for his compassionate and caring demeanor. Even being a strong-willed man, he would give the shirt off his back to any family or friend that were in need. He was a hard worker and a great provider; a wonderful dad and grandpa.

Survivors include: his wife of twenty-nine years, Jane Brooks; five children, Ora Marie Davis (husband Chris Davis), Billy W. Brooks (fiancée Samantha Pierson), Clarence L. Brooks (wife My Thi Brooks), Briar L. Brooks (fiancée Samantha Lister), and Herschel L. Brooks, Jr., all of Jefferson City, Mo.; two sisters, Geraldine Riddle (husband Jerry) of Holcomb, Mo. and Joyce Wiseman (husband Red) of Clarkton, Mo.; one brother, Bill Brooks (wife Betty Hill) of Gedion, Mo.; two grandchildren, Brandy Marie Brooks, Christopher Emmit Lee Davis, Jr. and two more grandchildren who will be born soon, Paisley Rain Brooks and Sabrina Bell Brooks; one sister-in-law, Linda Schetzler of Jefferson City, Mo.; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved beagle, Beaver.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2019.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Freeman Chapel with Mr. Rick Yoder officiating. Graveside services will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
