Obituary for James Heidbreder

James David Heidbreder, age 84, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2022, at his home.

Jim was born January 12, 1938 in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of George Henry and Katherine Jennie (Worley) Heidbreder.

It was during eighth grade that he met the love of his life, Helen Louise Willcoxon. They dated all through high school and he married Helen on August 30, 1958 at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Thomas Nelson officiating. They have been blessed with over 63 years of marriage, three children and lots of loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Jim graduated from Jefferson City High School. They lived the fairy tale of him being captain of the football team his senior year and Helen honored as homecoming queen. He went on to graduate from Lincoln University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. Shortly after graduation, Jim worked as the Division Head of the Budget and Comptroller’s Office that was located in the basement of the Missouri Capitol.

Jim possessed a strong work ethic and was extremely proud in August 1976 to start his own business, Summit United Super, which was his lifelong dream to start a grocery store in Holts Summit, Mo. He was the owner and operator for over 20 years until his retirement. He cherished the relationships he made with all the families that shopped with him and took a genuine interest in them all. He had a large presence but if you got to know him well, Jim had the biggest heart and always was doing things to help others.

Jim was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and previously taught Sunday school to high schoolers when his children were younger. Jim was also a member of the Holts Summit Lions Club.

Jim enjoyed fishing and traveling throughout the country with family and friends. Being an avid outdoorsman, he also spent time hunting deer, doves, rabbits, and squirrels. With his brothers, Jim helped build a cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks, and loved to spend time with his family there on the weekends. Jim was especially known for grilling chicken while everyone was still playing in the water.

One of things Jim relished the most in life was any time he spent with his family. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and always made them the number one priority in his life. They will remember him for his sense of humor, constant love and generous heart.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Helen Heidbreder; three children, David Heidbreder of Jefferson City, Kara Lehenbauer (Jeff) of Hatton, Mo. and Lori Massman (Leroy) of Jefferson City; sister, Janet Otke of Jefferson City; seven grandchildren, Drew Webb (Jennifer), Ashley Repp (Shawn), Cody Heidbreder (Amber), Kaleb Webb (Kayla), Cole Heidbreder, Kallie Jo Lehenbauer and Christian Massman; seven great-grandchildren Cooper Webb, Sadie Repp, Paisley Repp, Charliann Repp, Addison Heidbreder, Josie Heidbreder, Stella Webb; and his beloved dog, Lucy.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bill Heidbreder, Joan Brandstetter and Donald Heidbreder; and brother-in-law, Louis Otke.

Visitation will be held at First Baptist Church from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 27, 2022.

A Celebration of Jim’s Life will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Melissa Hatfield and the Reverend Rod Maples officiating. A webcast of his service will begin at 3:00 p.m. Friday for friends that are not able to attend by going to his memorial page on Freeman Mortuary’s website.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to First Baptist Church, 301 E. Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City, Mo. 65101.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary.
