Obituary for Jean Buchanan

Ms. Jean Hatsuko Buchanan, age 94, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at her son’s home.

She was born on December 1, 1927 in Hyogo Ken, Japan, the daughter of Gengo and Asano Mishina. She was married on April 2, 1954 in Kobe, Japan to Floyd Robert Buchanan, who preceded her in death on April 24, 1973.

Jean grew up in Japan, where she also attended school. She continued her education, earning a degree in English from Kobe English Institute. Her studies of the English language led her to become involved with the military during WWII working as a translator. It was during this time that she met her husband, a United States Army soldier.

Jean had a giving heart and was incredibly kind, patient and loving. She demonstrated this by dedicating her life to being a special needs teacher at the State School in St. Robert, Missouri.

Jean was very proud of her Japanese heritage and embraced the culture here in America every chance she could. She was talented in doing origami art and was an impressive cook. She was famous for her Japanese noodles and they were a staple request for all church dinners. Her faith was important to her. She was a long-time member of the First Christian Church in Waynesville, Mo. and she valued her family in Christ. Jean was a unique lady and had many interesting stories to tell about her compelling life. She made friends wherever she went, and never met a stranger. Jean will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include: two children, John Buchanan (wife, Diana) of Jefferson City, Mo., and June Evers (husband, Chris) of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Toshiko of Japan; and four grandchildren, Jason, Cameron, Logan, and Zoe.

Jean was preceded in death by her loving husband; her parents; and one brother, Hiroyuki Mishina.

A funeral service was conducted at First Christian Church in Waynesville, Mo. with the Reverend Roy Gilkey officiating. She was laid to rest next to her husband at Fort Leonard Wood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to First Christian Church in Waynesville, Mo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
