Obituary for Jeanette Hickman

Doris Jeanette Hickman, age 83, a former resident of Jefferson City, Mo. and Florida passed away Thursday, January 5, 2023, at The Arbors at Victorian Place in Washington, Mo.

Jeanette was born on November 21, 1939, in Jefferson City, Mo, the daughter of Gordon Byron and Doris Evelyn (Gibson) Hickman.

Jeannette was a 1957 graduate of Jefferson City High School and later graduated from Lincoln University with a bachelor’s degree in Education while majoring in Physical Education and English.

After college, she taught school for a few years in Union, Pacific and St. Clair, Mo. She then moved to Florida with her best friend, Phyllis Dearing, and she enjoyed the time there for many years. Jeannette moved back to Missouri a few years ago to be closer to her family. She has been living at The Arbor’s where she cherished her relationships with their residents and staff.

Jeanette had a lifelong passion for softball and will be remembered as a “world class” softball pitcher. She pitched for several teams in the mid-Missouri area including teams that won state titles. In Florida, she pitched for the “Orlando Rebels” and they finished second place in the 1963 World Tournament in Stratford, Connecticut. She was proud to be named to the All-Star team that year.

Along with softball, Jeannette enjoyed golfing, bowling and liked to do a little gambling. Having a background in English, she enjoyed every opportunity to open a good book and wrote a few short stories of her own. She took an active role in her family’s lives and enjoyed playing cards or going to Disney World with them. Her family will miss her witty sense of humor, big heart and caring nature.

Jeannette is survived by: two brothers, Kenneth Hickman and his wife Linda of Washington, Mo. and Randy Hickman of Osage City, Mo; a niece, Melanie; a nephew, Chris; two great-nieces, Alex and Chelsea; and numerous cousins and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Doris, and her best friend, Phyllis.

Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, 2023, in the Mausoleum of Hawthorn Memorial Gardens with Mr. Carey Terry officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Judes Children’s Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tn. 38105.
