Obituary for Jeannette A. Smith

Mrs. Jeannette A. Smith, age 83 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Monday, December 24, 2018 at the Timbers Nursing Center in Holts Summit, Mo.

Jeannette was born July 21, 1935 in Mexico, Mo. the daughter of James and Grace Ellen (Phillips) Glover. She was married on July 6, 1963 in Jefferson City, Mo. to Tom D. “Soupie” Smith who preceded her in death on June 18, 2014.

A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Jeannette was a graduate of Jefferson City High School and a 1953 graduate of the Jefferson City Junior College.

Soupie and Jeannette owned and operated Dix Nursery and Garden Center in Jefferson City until their retirement in 2012. Jeannette was the bookkeeper through the years and she truly enjoyed visiting with all the customers. She also had been employed working with medical records at Charles E. Still Hospital.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and a past member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

Jeannette loved spending time at their cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks, watching Missouri Basketball and was an avid reader. Most importantly, she cherished time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Family was always the center of her life and she was the one who always kept everyone in line but also provided a lot of laughs.

Survivors include: three sons, A. Ross Smith of Columbia, Mo., J. Scott Smith (wife Sandy) of Jefferson City, Mo., and M. Kent Smith (wife Denise) of Jefferson City, Mo.; six grandchildren, Lyndsey Wilson, Chandler Smith (wife Erin), Sally Kauffman, Scotty Smith, Drew Smith (wife Melissa) and Nolan Smith (wife Amanda); twelve great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Charlie Smith (wife Alice) of Kirkwood, Mo.; and one sister-in-law, Fran Glover of Jefferson City, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of fifty years, Soupie Smith; and one brother, James M. Glover.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 Noon Friday, December 28, 2018.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Friday, December 28, 2018 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Dr. David Henry officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church or the American Diabetes Assn.
