Obituary for Jessie Schell

Jessie Morgan Schell, age 106, of Jefferson City, Missouri, peacefully died March 23, 2023 at the Primrose Retirement Community in Jefferson City, Missouri.

She was born on May 11, 1916 in Wellsville, Missouri, the daughter of John Morgan and Louisa Boyd White. She was a graduate of Wellsville High School and attended Central College in Fayette, Missouri. Jessie was married on March 23, 1940 to Lee J. Schell who preceded her in death August 23, 1982.

Jessie came to Jefferson City in January of 1937 to work in the Attorney General’s office. At that time the Attorney General did not approve of women working so when she got married she had to quit. She then stayed at home and raised three children, John, Tom, and Christie. In 1963 she went back to work as a Legislative Assistant in the House of Representatives.

Jessie was a long time member of The First Christian Church in Jefferson City and active in the Ruth Circle. She also volunteered at Memorial Hospital, Hospice, and Red Cross.

Lee built a cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks in 1953 and all of the family enjoyed entertaining friends there. More than anything, Jessie loved being with her family and friends. She loved playing cards and was an avid MU football and basketball fan.

Jessie is survived by three children: John Schell (Juda) of Osage Beach, Mo.; Tom Schell (Becky) of Jackson, Wyoming, and Christie Hix (Jim) of Overland Park, Ks.; one granddaughter, Julie Hix; and five grandsons, John John (Julie), Jim Tom (Ronda), Jim Bob (Marlie), Jake (Kyla), and Tim (Stephanie). Her beloved grandson Joe preceded her in death in addition to her husband and parents.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at The First Christian Church, Jefferson City with the Reverend Dr. Michael Dunn officiating..

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at The First Christian Church. Private graveside services and entombment will be held in the Mausoleum of Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make a donation to the First Christian Church, 327 E. Capitol Ave, Jefferson City, MO 65101.

*Jessie’s handwritten obituary was found among her papers following her passing. The only changes made were to fill in the information she could not have known prior to her death. A sticky note was attached that said, “Family, you may change this, make corrections, shorten it or do whatever you like. I won’t care and besides, I’ll never know.”

Jessie’s family will remember her as a gracious host with a sweet-tempered demeanor. She was a social butterfly and enjoyed happy hour margaritas, bingo, and playing bridge. Her family was her deepest passion and she was dedicated to keeping up with each of their lives. She will be forever cherished and deeply missed.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary, 915 Madison St, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
