Obituary for Jim and Dean Case
After 50 years of marriage, Mr. James Nelson Case and Mrs. Martha Dean (Hurt) Case, passed away peacefully within hours of each other on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.
Jim was born on March 16, 1947 in Boonville, Mo., the son of Robert E. Case and Dorothy O. (Betteridge) Case. Dean was born on December 31, 1941 in Bunceton, Mo., the daughter of Paul and Bethel (Allee) Hurt.
They were united in marriage on June 20, 1970 in Bunceton, Mo.
Jim and Dean were both graduates of Bunceton High School. After graduation, Jim attended Linn State Technical College for Automotive Technology and played center for Linn State’s basketball team. He has always been extremely proud and stayed involved as an active alumnus. Dean’s college career included Hannibal LeGrange College, Lincoln University and the Kansas City Art Institute.
Jim was a master mechanic for the local Pontiac and Honda dealerships for over 40 years. He was a problem solver and had a solution for anything that was thrown his way. Jim was extremely generous with his time and was always helping others. Dean started her teaching career at Bunceton Elementary School and went on to spend the better part of her career with Jefferson City Public Schools. She was proud of being an art teacher at Lawson Elementary School and retired in 2007 after over 25 years of service.
Together, Jim and Dean had a strong relationship built on an even stronger foundation of faith. They were both active members of Concord Baptist Church. Jim was an usher, volunteered his mechanical skills with the Woman’s Car Clinic, worked with the Royal Ambassadors for youth boys, and facilitated countless events. Jim was also a 50-year member of the Wallace Masonic Lodge #456 in Bunceton, Mo.
Dean was a very passionate and talented photographer and was extremely creative. She loved taking pictures of wildlife and nature; and donated many of her photos to charity for different exhibits at Runge Nature Center. Her family and grandsons were her favorite subjects – and they are forever grateful for the keepsakes she has left behind. Jim spent much time outdoors; he enjoyed fishing with friends and family and was an avid deer hunter. Dean’s family will miss her talkative nature – especially debating with her about politics! Family will miss Jim’s selfless character and ability to never stop moving. They will be remembered together for their kind hearts, giving nature and helping spirits.
Jim and Dean’s world revolved around their son Justin and his family. Their greatest accomplishment was being promoted to “Nana Dean” and “Papa Jim”. Their fondest memories were always with their family.
Survivors include: their son, Justin Jay Case (Jennifer) of Jefferson City; three grandchildren, Brent Case, Taylor Case, and Connor Case; Jim’s sister, Jane Odneal (Don) of Jefferson City; Jim’s brother, John Case, of Jefferson City; nephews, Mitch Odneal (Lori) and Robert Odneal; and several other nieces and nephews.
They were preceded in death by their parents and Dean’s brother, Claude Hurt.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 pm Friday, October 16, 2020 at Concord Baptist Church. A Masonic Service will be held at 3:30 pm to honor Jim’s involvement with the Bunceton Masonic Lodge. The general public is welcome to attend their visitation while following social distancing guidelines and the family has requested friends and family to wear a protective mask.
Funeral services for both Jim and Dean will be conducted at 10:00 am Saturday, October 17, 2020 at Concord Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Monte Shinkle officiating. Private graveside services will be held at the Pisgah Cemetery in Bunceton, Mo. on Saturday.
A webcast of the funeral service will begin at 10:00 am Saturday for friends and family that are not able to attend by going to their memorial page on Freeman Mortuary’s website. Friends may mail sympathy cards to the funeral home or leave condolences online to be given to their family.
