Obituary for Joe Lehman

Joseph Stephen Lehman, age 63, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away August 30, 2022, at University Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

Joe was born January 9, 1959, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of Charles Lehman and Mary Ann Winkelmann-Headley. He was married on June 20, 1981, in Wardsville, Mo., to Bonnie Kempker, who survives at the home.

A lifelong resident of the Wardsville area, Joe was a 1977 graduate of Blair Oaks High School and a member of Saint Stanislaus Church.

Joe was employed as a pressman at Von Hoffman Press for 30 years. After his time as a pressman, he worked within the Office of Administration for State Printing, until retiring in 2019.

In Joe’s earlier years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and boating at the river, playing co-ed ball, coaching and watching his children in sporting events and many family outings. Joe participated in Taekwondo for several years and was a recommended black belt. Currently, he thoroughly enjoyed his side-by-side, his chair and television, swimming, and most importantly, his grandchildren. He loved giving his grandchildren rides on the side-by-side. Joe had a passion for animals and has been known to have many pets, including, his pot-belly-pig, Rudy. He had an ornery sense of humor and truly left a lasting impression on all who encountered him.

Survivors include: his loving wife of 41 years, Bonnie Lehman; two children, Deidre Koch (husband Phillip) of Bonner Springs, Kans. and Stephen Lehman (wife Alicia) of Jefferson City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Jetta, Bayn and Milo Lehman and Ellisyn and Josie Koch; one half-sister, Jean Ann Headley of Jefferson City, Mo.; Bonnie’s parents, his loving in-laws, Marilyn and Leonard Kempker; two sisters-in-law, Donna Berhorst (husband Mike) and Becky Rackers (husband Dwayne); two brothers-in-law, Rick Kempker (wife Debbie) and Dennis Kempker (wife Doris); 11 nieces and nephews and 10 great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Headley and her husband Jene; his father, Charles Lehman and his wife Ruth; maternal grandparents Joseph and Rose Ann Winklemann; paternal grandparents, Otto and Rose Lehman; and one brother-in-law, Scott Kempker.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and a prayer service held at 3:15 p.m. in the Freeman Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church with Reverend Monsignor Robert Kurwicki officiating. Private graveside services and inurnment will be held at St. Stanislaus Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society or Jefferson City Animal Shelter by mailing all donations to P.O. Box 95, Jefferson City, MO 65102.
