Obituary for John Allen

John Granville Allen, age 97, of Vista, California, passed away Saturday, May 6, 2023. He was the descendant of a long line of Allen’s, many of whom were born in Guthrie and New Bloomfield, Missouri.

He was born on January 21, 1926, in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of James Newton and Mabel Estelle (Gray) Allen. John married Jane McCoy Bales who preceded him in death. John married Cheryl Darlene Edwards on October 4, 1975, in Long Beach, California, who survives at the home.

John was a 1944 graduate of Jefferson City High School, and then went on to the University of Missouri where he graduated in 1957 with an accounting degree.

John honorably served his country in the United States Marines as a Corporal in World War II in the Pacific and Okinawa from 1944 until 1946 and again as a Sergeant in the Korean War from 1950 until 1951. He loved his country and was the finest example of someone who, without hesitation, was ready and willing to risk his life to protect our country.

After graduating from college, John worked for Haskins and Sells Accounting as an auditor from 1957 until 1959. He then worked for Hughes Aircraft Company in California for 30 years as a Controller until his retirement in 1989.

Living in California provided John with the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and pleasant weather. He cherished spending time outside and made sure to have golf outings three times a week at the Vista Valley Country Club. His passion for the sport led him to serve on the club's Board of Directors, where he actively contributed to its management and development.

John also prioritized his health and maintained a regular exercise routine. Staying fit and active allowed him to fully enjoy his golf outings and engage in various physical activities. Above all, John treasured his role as a grandfather and a great grandfather.

John is survived by: son, Charlton C. Allen (Sandra) of Murrieta, California; step-son, Michael French; grandchildren, Heather Kae McComas, Katie Allen Drew, Sarah Jane Thompson, and Sean Frederick Allen; and great-grandchildren, Makaela McComas, Dominic McComas, Charlie Drew, Jack Drew, Carter Allen, Blair Allen, James Thompson, and Clifford Thompson.

He is preceded in death by: brothers, Clifford Allen, Herbert Allen, and Melvin Allen; sister, Mae Allen, and his parents, James and Mabelle.

Graveside services and interment with military honors will be held at Dry Fork Cemetery near Guthrie, at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2023.
