Obituary for Lee Thompson

Mr. Leonard Lee Thompson, age 91, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 26, 2022 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

Lee was born on November 7, 1930 in Jefferson City, Mo., the son of George Riley and Martha Louise (Carsten) Thompson. He was married on July 8, 1957 at Central Church in Jefferson City to Bernadine L. “Bee” (Wyrick) Thompson who survives at the home.

Lee bravely served our country from 1951 until 1955 in the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Greenland and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.

Once he returned to civilian life, Lee worked for many places including the United States Postal Service, Halls and Pope Drug Stores, Blackman’s Service Station Supply, and Von Hoffman Press. Lee’s true passion and expertise was in finance and investments. He worked for 38 years as an insurance sales agent for American Family Insurance. He quickly gained the trust of the community, clients and colleagues alike, and made friendships that he nurtured and cherished for a lifetime.

Lee was a man of strong faith and a longtime member of Central Church. He served the church in many capacities, but his deepest dedication was exhibited by serving as a Sunday School Teacher. He made it a point to achieve perfect attendance. Lee enjoyed meeting for lunch with the other local American Family Insurance agents, where they discussed business experiences and current events.

Lee enjoyed discussing religion and politics among other topics, usually over a good cup of coffee. He was a collector and had an impressive collection of coins and played the steel guitar. The way his yard looked was very important to him and he and his wife maintained a beautiful garden. Lee looked forward to experiencing the “little things” in life, especially going on Sunday drives with his family. They often visited State and National Parks.

Survivors include: his loving wife of almost 65 years, Bee; two sons, Michael Thompson (husband, Larry Sanders) of Columbia, Mo., Eddy Thompson of Jefferson City, Mo.; step-daughter, Linda Boyce (husband, DeWayne) of Nixa, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Lee was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Norman Thompson; and step-son, David Shelton.

Private graveside services and interment will be conducted at the Mausoleum of Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Central Church, 118 West Ashley Street, Jefferson City, Missouri 65101.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
