He was born at home in Honey Creek on November 11, 1932 to Julius H. and Barbara M. (Sommerer) Engelbrecht. He was raised on the family farm with his five siblings and graduated from Eugene High School in 1950. LeRoy attended college for a short time before he was enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a medical equipment technician and obtained the rank of Corporal (1953-1956).

He married the love of his life, Doris Ann Sommerer on September 21, 1958 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Honey Creek.

LeRoy was a talented woodworker, and was known for his many handcrafted toys. He enjoyed lending his many other talents to help family and friends with various projects. LeRoy had a hands-on approach to life and spent many years hunting, fishing and gardening. He knew that life was meant to be filled with faith, family and friends, laughter and kindness.
