Obituary for LeRoy Engelbrecht

Mr. LeRoy Engelbrecht, 87, of Honey Creek, MO, passed away Friday, December 6, 2019 at Adams Street Place.

He was born at home in Honey Creek on November 11, 1932 to Julius H. and Barbara M. (Sommerer) Engelbrecht. He was raised on the family farm with his five siblings and graduated from Eugene High School in 1950. LeRoy attended college for a short time before he was enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a medical equipment technician and obtained the rank of Corporal (1953-1956).

LeRoy used his training from the Army to build his 40 year career as a medical service technician with Picker X-Ray Corporation (1956-1996).

He married the love of his life, Doris Ann Sommerer on September 21, 1958 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Honey Creek.

LeRoy was a talented woodworker, and was known for his many handcrafted toys. He enjoyed lending his many other talents to help family and friends with various projects. LeRoy had a hands-on approach to life and spent many years hunting, fishing and gardening. He knew that life was meant to be filled with faith, family and friends, laughter and kindness.

He was a member and former trustee of Immanuel Lutheran Church and supporter of the National Rifle Association, and the Army Historical Foundation/National Army Museum.

Survivors include: his wife, Doris Engelbrecht of the home; sons, Curtis Engelbrecht (Debra) of Bel Aire, KS, Dennis Engelbrecht (Linda) of Philomath, OR, and Kevin Engelbrecht (Roseann) of Honey Creek, MO; ten grandchildren, Joshua Engelbrecht (Liesel), Jenni Engelbrecht (Ory Smith), Jaqueline Engelbrecht (Kristen), Patricia VanSant (David), Claire McBride, Rachel Port (Seth), Rebecca Engelbrecht, Amber Bennett (Cody), Austin Engelbrecht, and Kaitlyn Engelbrecht; thirteen great-grandchildren, Sydney, Maia, Logan, Case, Asher, Leo, Kane, Prairie, Graysen, Sophia, Lyla, Alanie and Madaline; sister, Mary Ann McNaire of Hamilton, MO; sisters-in-law, Patricia "Pat" Engelbrecht, Roberta Engelbrecht and Phyllis Sommerer; brother-in-law, George Sommerer (Pat) all of Jefferson City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his grandparents, Martin and Catherine Engelbrecht, and John and Anna Sommerer; siblings, Alma Webb (Jack), Helen Cowley (John), Martin Engelbrecht, and Alice “Betty” Von DerHaar (Norbert); infant siblings, Alan, Anna and Gladys Engelbrecht; brothers-in-law, Leonard ‘Mac” McNaire, Richard “Dick” Engelbrecht and Floyd Sommerer; and granddaughter, Sarah McBride.

Visitation will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Honey Creek from 4:00 until 7:00 pm Friday, December 20, 2019 with an additional visitation being held before his service from 10:00 until 11:00 am on Saturday.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Reverend Dr. Richard Foss officiating. Graveside services will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, Calvary Lutheran High School or the Alzheimer’s Association.
