Obituary for Lucy Sjoblom

Sara Lucille “Lucy” Sjoblom, age 89, formerly of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at Balfour Retirement Community in Louisville, Co.

Lucy was born on August 14, 1933, in Ada, Okla., the daughter of William Lattimore and Dixie Lee (Russell) Compere. She was married June 8, 1957, at Calvary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Mo., to Ernest L. Sjoblom, who preceded her in death on October 15, 2000.

Lucy was a graduate of Sarcoxie High School in Sarcoxie, Mo. She attended the University of Tulsa, Kansas City University and then later graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Art degree.

She started her career as a staff artist for the Tulsa World-Tribune. In Jefferson City, Lucy did displays and advertising for JC Penney, was an advertising manager at Milo H. Walz, taught commercial art at Nichols Career Center and had her own free-lance art business.

Lucy was an active member of First Baptist Church in Jefferson City and participated in numerous disaster relief, medical and teaching mission trips to China, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Louisiana and Joplin.

For 17 years, Lucy was a Girl Scout leader and enjoyed volunteering with ABLE, Habitat for Humanity, Capital Arts Gallery, City of Jefferson Environmental Quality Commission, and the Samaritan Center. She served as an election judge and was a member and past president of the Jefferson City Art Club and a charter member of Cultured Pearls.

Along with being able to travel on mission trips, Lucy also had the great opportunity to explore the world visiting Norway, Sweden, Denmark, England, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Wales, Ecuador, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sicily, Gibraltar, Morocco, Russia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Ireland, India and Nepal. She was a fearless and curious traveler and was proud to experience all 50 states and six continents.

She was extremely creative and channeled that talent into many ways, reportedly drawing on every piece of spare paper or envelope in her sight since childhood. She also loved sharing her talents with her family and friends. Her Christmas cards always featured one of her watercolor paintings inspired by her travels. And, she made custom designed needlepoint Christmas stockings for every new arrival to the family.

Lucy is survived by: her son, John Sjoblom (Tracy Smedley) of Kansas City, Mo.; daughter, Barbara Long (Brian) of Erie, Co.; granddaughter, Audrey Long Schroer (Hunter) of Iowa City, IA; two great-grandchildren, Wendell and Vera Schroer; and her nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sister, Jan Rhodes; brother, William Compere; and sister-in-law, Judith McDonald Compere.
