Obituary for Mary Jo Hilker

Mary Josephine Hilker, age 82, formerly of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022, at Breeze Park Care Center in Weldon Springs, Mo.

Mary Jo was born on July 4, 1939 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Clement Lee and Dorothy Whitcomb (Reed) Huyck. She was married on July 25, 1959 in Clayton, Mo. to John Howard Hilker, who preceded her in death on November 6, 2012.

Mary Jo was a 1957 graduate of Clayton High School.

She was a floral designer and had the honor of designing and installing Christmas decorations for the Missouri Governor’s Mansion in Jefferson City, Mo.

Mary Jo possessed a strong faith and was a member of St. Mark’s in Clayton, Mo., Shepherd of the Hills in Bridgeton, Mo., and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson City. Through the years, Mary Jo was active with many of the bible studies and enjoyed the fellowship of their congregations.

Mary Jo had and shared great enthusiasm for creative activities. All her life, she enjoyed drawing, painting, and art in all forms, also including knitting, crocheting, macramé, and needlepoint. In addition, she learned to belly dance and performed with a belly-dancing troupe at festivals and around St. Louis.

Survivors include: two children, Elizabeth Stecz (Matthew) of Florissant, Mo. and Kenneth Hilker (Erica Sibinga) of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Stella Holmes (Edward) of Baltimore, Md., and Clarissa Morrell (Edward) of Raleigh, NC.; four grandchildren, Nicole Stecz, Stephanie Cowley, Lauren Stecz and Dora Hilker; and two great-grandchildren, Skylar Mahler and Lillie Cowley.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband of 53 years, John.

Due to the pandemic, a private graveside service and interment were held at Riverview Cemetery in Jefferson City, Mo. with the Reverend Scott Musselman officiating. A Celebration of Mary Jo’s Life will be set for later this year and announced closer to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson City.
