Obituary for Nelda White

Nelda G. White, 83, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Adams Street Place.

She was born on November 19, 1936 on the family farm near Knox City, MO a twin daughter of George and Virgie (Kennedy) Turner. She was married on January 6, 1956 in Edina, MO to Thomas F. White who preceded her in death on May 13, 1990.

Nelda was a 1954 graduate of Edina High School, and went on to attend Northeast Missouri Teachers College in Kirksville, MO where she met her husband, Tom. Nelda worked for the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, AAA and TCI Cable Company. After her retirement, she returned to work part-time for the Missouri State Health Lab.

Nelda looked for the light in every cloud. She lived life with a positive attitude, put the needs of her friends and family above those of her own and tried to be there for them when they needed to be heard. Sharing her food was one of the many ways that she expressed her love for those around her. Her home cooking, especially her Christmas cookies and candies, made everyone smile!

Nelda had a quiet courage about her and would try most anything once. That’s how she fell in love with sushi. Caterpillars were the one thing that she admitted being afraid of.

Nelda loved to travel, especially with her family. Flying to the Caribbean and Mexico was nice but road trips really made her happy. Through the years she toured most of the 48 contiguous states and Canada. She was also a committed football fan and for over 45 years attended every MIZZOU home football game. Her tailgates were legendary for their food and hospitality. She was a super fan though for all Missouri teams. Go Cardinals!

Survivors include: her children, Elizabeth Christopher of Jefferson City, MO and Tom White (Tammy Smith-White) of San Francisco, CA; her sister, Velda Law of Fruitland, ID; her sisters-in-law, Martha Ann Gerhke (Wendell) of Queen City, MO and Lily Turner of Ashland, MO; grandchildren, Jessica Breuer, Shaun Christopher, Mary Christopher, and Caroline White; great-grandson, Sawyer Christopher; and many other family and friends all whom “she loved to the moon and back”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, George Turner.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at the Pavilion of Riverview Cemetery with the Reverend Trevor Dancer officiating. A recording of the service will be available for friends that are not able to attend by going to her memorial page on Freeman Mortuary’s website.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Jefferson City Halo Home, 3519 Bennett Lane, Jefferson City, MO 65101

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
