Obituary for Norma Jean Shields

Norma Jean Shields, 93, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Monday, June 6, 2022 at her home.

She was born February 16, 1929 in Schuyler County, Il., the daughter of the late Chester W. and Edyth S. (Conway) Waner. She was united in marriage on August 8, 1948 in Plymouth, Il. to Robert H. “Bob” Shields, who preceded her in death on February 18, 2010.

Jean attended one room schools near Augusta and Bowen, Il., before attending Bowen High School.

She and Bob were active members of the First Christian Church in Camp Point, Illinois prior to moving to Troy, Mo. in 1971. They attended Capital West Christian Church in Jefferson City after moving closer to their son in 2006.

In her early married years, Jean was a housewife. Her summers were spent tending large gardens and canning many vegetables. She also enjoyed babysitting several children. She worked in the cafeteria at Buchanan Schools in Troy for many years where she made friends with students as they progressed from kindergarten to high school.

Jean was an excellent cook and always prepared the favorite dish for each person present at family gatherings. Her egg noodles were always a special hit. She enjoyed working word puzzles and playing cards. It was fitting that she spent the last hours of her earthly life playing Skip-Bo with her friends.

She is survived by her son, Greg L. Shields (Linda) of Jefferson City; daughter-in-law, Mary Jayne Tuzzo of Quincy, Il; granddaughter, Amy Coyle of O’Fallon, Mo.; two step-grandchildren, William Simms (Jennifer) of Kansas City, and Matthew Simms of Salt Lake City; and two step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Jean was preceded in death by her son, Robert K. Shields on July 17, 2007; sisters, Reba Waner and Hazel Downing (Jack); brother, Chester C. “Timer” Waner (Flo); niece, Anita June (Waner) Lee; and nephew, Michael Waner.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 10:00 until 11:00 am Saturday, June 11, 2022. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am in the Freeman Chapel with Mr. Rick Yoder officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm at Evergreen Cemetery in Camp Point, Il.
