Mr. Otis Wayne Woods, age 80 years, of Holts Summit, Mo. passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019 at Capital Region Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Otis was born on April 7, 1939 in Boone County, a son of Ora Otis and Emma (Helton) Woods. He was married on July 6, 1963 in Jefferson City to Ruth Ann Burns.

A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Otis attended Southern Boone High School in Ashland, Mo.

He was employed as a Toe Laster with the International Shoe Company for 41 years. He retired from the union at the Footwear Distribution Company.

Otis was a faithful member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Hartsburg, Mo.

Otis found peace being outdoors and loved fishing, camping and gardening with his family. His favorite music was blue grass and it was always playing when he was frying fish. Otis was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan and never missed a game if he could help it. He enjoyed working with his hands and was proud that he built his own house with his father and brother-in-law, Robert Burns.

Otis will be remembered for his “heart of gold” and never knowing a stranger. He truly cherished time with his family, friends and made the most out of his days.

Survivors include: his wife of 56 years, Ruth Ann Woods; son, Earl Woods (Chelle Schnieders) and daughter, Judy Freeman all of Holts Summit; sister, Shirley Wood of Taos; grandchildren, Thomas Freeman, Jared Woods, Alicia Woods and Amber Woods; great-grandson, Maverik Woodruff; brothers-in-law, John Burns (Jane), Jim Burns (Bonnie), Bill Burns, Pat Burns and Roger Burns; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Ora and Emma Woods; brother, Ray Woods; and in-laws, John Wood, Robert Burns, Raymond Burns, Tom Burns, Connie Woodling, and Mary Evers.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 25, 2019.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Hartsburg, Mo. with the Reverend Johnny Hendricks officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary.

Otis joined our family when I was about 6. He was always more like another brother than a brother-in-law. He had the best laugh. I loved it when he used to take me along to run his fishing lines. Once in a while we would stop at Scottie’s and he would buy me a hamburger. Otis was a good man and a self confident man. When looking at a handmade quilt representing holidays, everyone was picking their favorite square. When it was Otis’s turn, he said, “Well, I like the little pink umbrella.” Otis was a loving husband and doted on my sister. I can still hear him saying, “Well, Ruth!” And then he would laugh that wonderful laugh of his. He loved his children and grandchildren and was proud of all of them. A kind man, a gentle man and a gentleman. Such a good man will be greatly missed.
