Obituary for Richard Baumann

Mr. Richard Laurance Baumann, age 79, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on January 18, 2023 in his home.

He was born on May 11, 1943 in Galveston, Tx., to Alvin Ernst and Sarah Elizabeth (Jackson) Baumann. Richard lovingly treated his nieces and nephews like they were his own.

A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Richard worked in the Maintenance Department for the Missouri State Penitentiary and retired with over 30 years of service. He was featured in a book entitled "Unguarded Moments: Stories of Working Inside the Missouri State Penitentiary.”

Richard was a master woodworker and enjoyed making wooden puzzle boxes and trucks without any screws and nails. He would give them to his nieces and nephews to figure out. Richard would put a coin inside the puzzle and the goal was to get it out. One niece still has her coin inside. He loved old cars and cherished his 1968 shiny olive-green Ford Mustang. His other hobbies included keeping his mind fresh with Sudoku and reading his sci-fi and fantasy books.

His favorite holiday was Christmas. You could often find him in a Santa costume with his own fluffy white beard regardless of the time of year. Richard loved baking and some of his memorable desserts were jalapeño peanut butter cookies, a delicious chocolate pecan pie and lastly his infamous puppy chow.

He enjoyed travelling and spending time in New Orleans; his most memorable trip was being there for Halloween. Locally, he was a member of the Healthplex where he treasured the socialization and friendships he made while getting healthy. He considered the “ladies” of the Healthplex his extended family.

His family and friends will always remember his big caring heart and willingness to help wherever needed.

Survivors include his brother, Fred H. Baumann of Bland, Mo.; nieces and nephews, Alvin Shaul, Dena Stradford, Cassidy Cooley (David), Billie Jean Baumann, Doug Beier, Lisa Baumann, Tina Baumann, DeWayne Baumann, and Christine Baumann; numerous great nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bonnie Jones, Donna Beier, and Edwin Baumann; nephew, Perry Beier and great niece, Hannah Elizabeth Gayle Cooley.

A visitation to celebrate Richard’s life will be held from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Freeman Mortuary. The family requests guests wear tie-dye in his honor. The family will host another celebration in late spring on his land.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Shriners Hospitals for Children, PO Box 947765 Atlanta, GA 30394.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Freeman Mortuary, 915 Madison St, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
