Obituary

Richard W. “Rick” Grothoff, age 82 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Monday, October 19, 2020 at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital.

Rick was born on October 18, 1938 on the family farm in Taos, Mo., the son of Joseph and Johanna (Forck) Grothoff. He was married on September 30, 1961 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jefferson City, Mo. to Irene Shelley who survives at the home.

A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Rick was a 1956 graduate of Fatima High School. After high school, Rick enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served before being honorably discharged in 1959.

Rick worked as a plumber for various companies before he was hired on with Harold G. Butzer. In 2001, he retired following his 20-year career with them.

Rick was a member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562 and the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5.

Rick was a family man. He especially loved helping, visiting, and spending time with his family. His wife will cherish her memories of them dancing together as well as watching cardinal baseball games. Rick never met a stranger; he saw someone he knew everywhere he went and made it a point to stop to catch up and have a conversation.

Rick was preceded in death by: his parents; one son, Kenneth “Kenny” Grothoff; three brothers; and two sisters.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:30 am Monday, October 26, 2020 at Freeman Mortuary. The general public is welcome to attend the visitation while following social distancing guidelines. Rick was a very friendly person and did a lot of kind deeds for others. He was a great friend to our next door neighbor and even after Dick passed away, visited with Barbara and brought her some of his garden produce. Prayers for Irene and his family, as they move forward, remembering him in so many things they do each day! Dan and Betty Fast

I am so deeply saddened with the loss of Uncle Richard and the my inability to attend his services. All of which keeps the amazing memories of Uncle Richard flooding back to me. Every time Richard was amongst his nephews and nieces, the moments would quickly turn into a nonstop laugh fest. He joked and he teased...and he took alot of teasing as well. One of the earliest and favorite memory is of attending the wedding of Richard and the beautiful Irene. Aunt Irene, I hope knowing that the many many people whose lives were deeply touched by Uncle Richard will bring you some solace during this sad times. I love you Aunt Irene and Uncle Richard. I will deeply missed Uncle Richard.

We are so sorry about Uncle Rick's passing. We will miss his smile and laughter, but his memory will always warm our hearts. We're sure he's having a time with his brothers and sisters now. We regret that we were unable to make it in person to his service, but we were able to watch it on the live stream. It was beautiful and touching. Know that we were praying with you, and that you and Rick will remain in our prayers. With love and condolences, Mark and Marla Grothoff.

Ask anyone for their “Top 10 Greatest Human Beings”, and if they knew Uncle Rick, I bet he would be on their list...he’s definitely on mine! Mostly because he “walked the walk” of a humble, joyful, funny, unpretentious, sincere, kind and hard-working, man of his family, and of faith.

**God, thank you for allowing us to have your son, Rick Grothoff, for as long as we have. He’s was an excellent example to all, and we will remember him fondly forever. Amen**
