Obituary for Robert E. Chiles Sr.

Robert E. Chiles, Sr., age 84, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Sunday, July 14, 2019 at Oak Tree Villas surrounded by his family.

Bob was born on March 6, 1935 in Mokane, Mo. a son of E. Boone and Helen (Dearing) Chiles. He was married on June 6, 1959 in Blytheville, Arkansas to Kay Hindman.

A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Bob was a 1953 graduate of Jefferson City High School, a 1955 graduate of the Jefferson City Junior College, and a 1962 graduate of Lincoln University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration majoring in accounting. He also was a 1968 graduate of the Storrs, Connecticut and Athens, Georgia School for Executive Management.

Bob served in the United States Air Force from June 1955 until December 1958. He served in Texas, the Far East, Arkansas, and attended accounting school at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Fall, Texas.

He was employed with City National Savings and Loan from 1962 until his retirement in 2000 as President, Managing Partner, and Member of the Board of Directors. He had served as Assistant Secretary, Corporate Secretary, Loan Officer, and Vice President.

Bob was a member of the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank from 1984 until 1994, serving as President. He was a member of the Missouri Savings and Loan League, serving as Chairman of the Legislative Committee, Vice President, and President. He was also a member of the American Savings and Loan Institute serving as National Director from 1974 until 1976. He was appointed to the Missouri Savings and Loan Commission for eight years. He served on the Lincoln University Board of Curators for five years.

His local involvement included a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer with Lincoln University Foundation; a member of the Board of Directors of the Jefferson City Y.M.C.A.; and member and 1973 President of the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce; a charter member and Secretary of the Jefferson City Evening Lions Club; and member and President of the Local Chapter of the American Savings and Loan Institute, and a member and President of the Missouri Savings and Loan League for Staff Development.

For twenty-five years, Bob was a licensed official with the Missouri State Athletic Assn. officiating in football, basketball, and baseball games. He also officiated Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association college football games, and loved playing golf.

Survivors include: Kay Chiles of Jefferson City, Mo.; three sons, Robert E. Chiles, Jr. and his wife Kary, Bill W. Chiles and his wife Stacy, and C. David Chiles and his wife Leslie, all of Jefferson City, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Jared Chiles, Kelley Chiles, Katlyn Chiles, Halle Chiles, Brendan Chiles, Logan Chiles, Reece Chiles, and Alex Chiles; and one great-granddaughter, Lillian Chiles.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; his step-mother, Earlene Chiles; and his brother, Bill Chiles.

Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 11:00 until 1:00 pm Thursday, July 18, 2019.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, July 18, 2019 in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Bob Nilges officiating. Private gravesides services with military honors will be held at the Mokane Cemetery, Mokane, Mo.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105
