Obituary for Rosie Vaught

Mr. Dennis Leroy “Rosie” Vaught, age 74, of Jefferson City, Mo. passed away Friday, November 18, 2022 at the Capital Region Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Rosie was born on September 1, 1948 in Jefferson City, Mo. a son of Arthur and Annie Lucille (Vaught) Neely. He was raised by his mother and step-father, John Armstrong.

A lifelong resident of the central Missouri area, Rosie was a graduate of Jefferson City High School. When he was younger, he loved playing slow pitch softball. He would play on multiple teams every summer as the pitcher and one year even played a softball game in Busch Stadium.

In 1968, he married Kathy Rackers in Jefferson City, Mo. and from this marriage, he was blessed with his son, Scott.

Rosie possessed a strong work ethic and was proud to be employed for over 30 years with Scruggs Lumber. He began working in the lumber yard and then transitioned into sales. He also worked for some time with Midwest Block and Brick but came back to end his career at Scuggs Lumber. Rosie truly loved his job because he was blessed with the gift of conversation and storytelling. He truly never met a stranger and would chat with anyone. He would even chat ten minutes with a wrong number phone call. It came easy to him and with his funny sense of humor and uplifting mood, everyone enjoyed his company.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Helias Council #1054. He also had a breakfast group at Oscar’s Restaurant that he started every day with.

Rosie looked forward to time grilling while socializing with his friends and family. Being a big sports fan, he cheered for the Mizzou Football team and the St. Louis Cardinals. Rosie also had a compassionate heart and felt obligated to feed every stray cat or animal that wondered into his front yard.

Survivors include: one son, Scott Vaught (Pam) of Gravois Mills, Mo.; nephew, Craig Flowers (Diane) of Fulton, Mo.; significant other, Janet Hart; good friend and an "adoptive" daughter, Stephanie Scruggs and the rest of the Sunday’s Oscar’s crew, Jennifer Gardner and Stacey Vieth, which he referred to as “Rosie’s Angels”; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Lucille and John Armstrong; step-brother, Darrell Sinderson; twin sister, Diane Chronister; aunt, Lee Bloomer; and his beloved cat, Scratch.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday, November 28, 2022.
