Obituary for Scott E. Whiting

Scott Eugene Whiting, age 65, of Holts Summit, Mo., passed away Monday, October 31, 2022, at home surrounded by his family after a short battle with lung cancer.

Scott was born on June 29, 1957 in Grant, Nebraska, the son of John Eugene and Betty Elaine (King) Whiting. His father passed away at a young age so he was raised by his mother and step-father, Don Grothendick.

Scott spent the majority of his childhood living in Colorado and that was the time he became passionate about the outdoors. He was a 1974 graduate of Arvada West High School in Arvada, Colorado where he was a member of the marching band and marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Scott proudly served his country in the United States Navy as an Electronics Technician Radar Seaman Apprentice and was a graduate of the Naval Special Training Command, Great Lakes, Illinois. He later studied agriculture at Lincoln University, earning a Bachelor’s degree.

It was during his time in the United States Navy that he met the love of his life, Viola Falter. They were married on October 27, 1977 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Arvada, Colorado and were blessed with 45 years of marriage.

He was an enthusiastic entrepreneur and was never afraid to take on new challenges. For many years, Scott owned and operated his own businesses: JKM Communications, Lake Property Watch Services, Kandles & More, Ultraweb, Computer Centre and Video Centre, which were both very successful businesses for almost 20 years. He coordinated U-Haul Rentals, worked for the Missouri Department of Labor/Employment Security, and for the Lincoln University Agricultural Department. He was also an instructor at Linn State Technical College teaching computer information systems. For the last 20 years, Scott was contracted as a Full Stack Web Developer with Clean Fuels Alliance America, formerly the National Biodiesel Board.

Scott was always learning, especially reading and researching health and technology. He enjoyed golfing, hiking and camping, playing his guitar, bowling and traveling in their RV. He was often found in his workshop tinkering with woodworking projects or working on one of his many computers. Scott was able to fix almost anything.

His greatest accomplishments were his marriage to Viola and raising two happy and successful daughters. He was also proud of completing 125 miles in the Bike MS at the age of 59 and riding more than 1,000 miles on the Katy Trail.

While Scott had many hobbies and interests, his fondest memories were with his family. Passing on his love of bicycle riding, they rode many miles together on the Katy Trail. He enjoyed coaching his girls in softball and attending both his daughters and grandchildren’s sporting events. He always looked forward to their family dinners and countless games of cards or dominoes.

Survivors include: his loving wife, Viola Whiting; two daughters, Stephanie Bryan (Corey) of Wardsville, Mo. and Jasmine Wiggans (Garrett) of Jefferson City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Colten and Carter Bryan, Avery Foster, and Emerson and Tatum Wiggans; and two siblings, Terry Whiting (Kathy) and Jacque Whiting.

Scott was preceded in death by his father, John Whiting; his mother and step-father, Betty and Don Grothendick; and his foster parents, Earl and Dee Jones.

Visitation will be held at Freeman Mortuary from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Thursday, November 3, 2022. A Celebration of Scott’s Life will be held at 6:00 p.m., Thursday in the Freeman Chapel, concluding with military honors.

A webcast of the service will begin at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, November 3, 2022, for friends that are not able to attend by going to his memorial page on Freeman Mortuary’s website.
