Obituary for Sue Thompson

Mrs. Yvonne Sue Thompson, 84, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 20, 2022 at Twin Oaks Assisted Living in Wentzville, Mo.

She was born on January 3, 1938 in Flat River, Mo., a daughter of Adolph and Jessie Mae (DeGrant) Beard. She was married on July 25, 1957 in Flat River to Reverend Paul Wayne Thompson, who preceded her in death on October 5, 2021.

Sue graduated from Flat River High School and attended some college. She worked for the Jefferson City News Tribune where she served as Secretary and Assistant to Mrs. Betty Weldon.

A woman of strong faith Sue was a longtime member of First Baptist Church where she served in many capacities by assisting in the church office, singing in the choir, and teaching a Senior Women’s Sunday School Class. She went on numerous mission trips including the Great Wall of China. She also attended yearly Baptist Retreats at the Windermere Retreat Center.

Sue was a talented musician and enjoyed being an elementary school music teacher. An avid reader, she could often be found engrossed in a good novel. Sue and Paul enjoyed traveling to Florida and Maine and taking Scott to Disney World and Disney Land as a child. Sue loved cookies and became known as the “Cookie Monster”. Her favorite being Kim’s peanut butter cookies that she always kept stocked in her kitchen. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings especially at Easter and Christmas. Sue had a natural, genuine love and cared for all people. Her tender heart and graceful demeanor made her loved by many and she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include: her son, Scott Thompson of Hazelwood, Mo.; sister, Shirley Abernathy of Wentzville, Mo.; nieces and nephews, Rev. Jim and Dana Wicker, Jim and Wynne Abernathy, Lea and Michael Eilers, Lee Mayes and Joel Thompson; and her caregiver, Kim Boland, who was like a daughter to her.

Sue was preceded in death by her loving husband; her parents; brother, Bud Beard; and brother-in-law, Jim Abernathy.

Visitation will be at First Baptist Church from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm Saturday, February 26, 2022. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 pm with the Reverend Dr. Jim Wicker and the Reverend Dr. Keith Herron officiating. Graveside services will be at Riverview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church.
