Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Holliday, age 89 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Capital Region Medical Center surrounded by family.

She was born on October 19, 1931 in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Clem August and Elsie Marie (Eiken) Hoelscher. She was married on July 2, 1949 in Batesville, Arkansas to William Alfred Holliday, who preceded her in death on April 2, 1993.

A lifelong resident of the Central Missouri area, Mary attended St. Peter’s School. She was employed with Newberry’s Department Store before she began her career in the shoe industry. She worked for both Tweedy and International Shoe Factory and later Florsheim until she retired in the mid-90’s.

Mary was formerly an active member of the Salvation Army and later joined the First Assembly of God.

Mary spent many hours in gardening; both flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed playing cards with family and the card club at her apartment building – Sequence and Kings in the Corner were always a favorite. She often played games with her grandkids, whom she always looked forward to babysitting. Mary also spent time quilting, singing and working on jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include: her daughter, Debra Yancey of Jefferson City, Mo.; her grandchildren, Laurie Herzing (Kent) of Jefferson City, Mo. and Rachel Lehmen (Curt) of Westphalia, Mo.; her great-grandchildren, Kendal Herzing, Cole Lehmen, Nathan Lehmen and Addison Lehmen; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years; an infant daughter, Sherry Lynn; her parents; her siblings, Cyrilla Moad, Edgar Hoelscher, and Clem Hoelscher Jr.; and her step-siblings, Bessie Vittitoe, Jessie Holliday, Florence Humphrey, Leonard Zimmerman, and Freeman Zimmerman.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Freeman Mortuary. The general public is welcome to attend the visitation while following social distancing guidelines. Please stay 6 feet apart and avoid close contact. Anyone is welcome and encouraged to wear personal masks or other personal protective equipment while in attendance.

Funeral services for Mary will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, April 1, 2021 in the Freeman Chapel with Reverend Lowell Perkins officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens.

A webcast of the funeral service will begin at 11:00 am Thursday, April 1, 2021 for family and friends to view by going to the “photos and videos” tab on this page and scrolling down to the webcasting link. Friends may mail sympathy cards to the funeral home to be given to her family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to First Assembly of God.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.
