Obituary for Mavis Thompson

Mavis Thompson
Mrs. D. Mavis Thompson, age 88 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Heisinger Bluffs.

She was born on September 20, 1926 near Manchester, England the daughter of Harold and Alice Pomfret Withington. She grew up in England, blessed with a beautiful voice and sang as her father accompanied her on the piano. She enjoyed swimming in the ocean during her younger years.

She met her husband during his time serving in the United States Army during World War II. She was married on February 10, 1945 in England to Earl E. Thompson, who preceded her in death in 1998.

After the war, they moved to Mason City, Iowa in 1946 where Mavis was a homemaker raising her two daughters while Earl farmed. She also worked as an office manager for a few car dealerships in Mason City, Iowa.

The past few years ill health forced Mavis to move to Jefferson City to be closer to family.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City and was active in the church choir and one of the ladies circles which served many wedding and funeral meals.

Mavis was a wonderful cook and her two main passions in life were her family and faith. She enjoyed baking, jigsaw puzzles, swimming, crossword puzzles, knitting, and quilting for her grandchildren. Her family has fond memories of her fishing with her husband at their summer place in Minnesota.

Survivors include her two daughters, Jeanette A. (Roger) Farrow of Osage Beach, Mo., Jennifer L. (David) Andersen of Lubbock, Tx.; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, Alyssa Farrow of Jefferson City, Mo., Katie (Eric) Venegas of Dallas, Tx., Brian (Nicole) Farrow of Sacramento, Ca. and their children Jonathan and Riley, Collin (Cara) Farrow of Overland Park, Ks., and their children Maxwell and Jillian, Kris (Josh) Andersen of Abilene, Tx., Elyse (L.J.) Duff of Lubbock, Tx. and their children Danielle and Joey.

Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Alice Withington; her husband, Earl; two brothers, K. Brian Withington and W. Norman Withington.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later time.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Heisinger Bluffs Benevolent Fund, 1002 West Main Street, Jefferson City, Mo. 65109.
