Nelda G. White, 83, of Jefferson City, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Adams Street Place.

She was born on November 19, 1936 on the family farm near Knox City, MO a twin daughter of George and Virgie (Kennedy) Turner. She was married on January 6, 1956 in Edina, MO to Thomas F. White who preceded her in death on May 13, 1990.

Nelda was a 1954 graduate of Edina High School, and went on to attend Northeast Missouri Teachers College in Kirksville, MO where she met her husband, Tom. Nelda worked for the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, AAA and TCI Cable Company. After her retirement, she returned to work part-time for the Missouri State Health Lab.

Nelda looked for the light in every cloud. She lived life with a positive attitude, put the needs of her friends and family above those of her own and tried to be there for them when they needed to be heard. Sharing her food was one of the many ways that she expressed her love for those around her. Her home cooking, especially her Christmas cookies and candies, made everyone smile!

Nelda had a quiet courage about her and would try most anything once. That’s how she fell in love with sushi. Caterpillars were the one thing that she admitted being afraid of.

Nelda loved to travel, especially with her family. Flying to the Caribbean and Mexico was nice but road trips really made her happy. Through the years she toured most of the 48 contiguous states and Canada. She was also a committed football fan and for over 45 years attended every MIZZOU home football game. Her tailgates were legendary for their food and hospitality. She was a super fan though for all Missouri teams. Go Cardinals!

Survivors include: her children, Elizabeth Christopher of Jefferson City, MO and Tom White (Tammy Smith-White) of San Francisco, CA; her sister, Velda Law of Fruitland, ID; her sisters-in-law, Martha Ann Gerhke (Wendell) of Queen City, MO and Lily Turner of Ashland, MO; grandchildren, Jessica Breuer, Shaun Christopher, Mary Christopher, and Caroline White; great-grandson, Sawyer Christopher; and many other family and friends all whom “she loved to the moon and back”.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, George Turner.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at the Pavilion of Riverview Cemetery with the Reverend Trevor Dancer officiating. A recording of the service will be available for friends that are not able to attend by going to her memorial page on Freeman Mortuary’s website.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Jefferson City Halo Home, 3519 Bennett Lane, Jefferson City, MO 65101

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Freeman Mortuary.

I have so many memories of Tom and Nelda. On April 5, 1961 while living in Kirksville, MO, Tom sold me my very first life insurance policy, then eventually led me to be recruited by Prudential, where I was employed for 36 years. While in Kirksville, one day Nelda brought you, Tommy, to visit my first wife, Vicki, and me. We had this cuckoo clock on the wall which we had received as a wedding present. While the visiting was going on, you proceeded to climb onto the back of the sofa and wipe out the clock! Nelda was so embarrassed. Tom and I both promoted with Prudential in 1968, Tom/Nelda to Jefferson City and Vicki/me to Marshall. Your parents lived in the same house all those years while in Jeff City. Nelda always called me "Jerry Eugene' and never forgot my birthday (usually with a card and phone call). I was her sounding board for insurance questions. Every year at annual enrollment time, I would receive a call about Prudential benefit changes. Our friendships will never be forgotten. With our heartfelt sympathy, Jerry "Eugene" Hitt (and Millie)

We met Nelda on many occasions through our friendship with Tom, Tammy and Caroline. Our memories of her are a little like a reel of images throughout the years. Before we met her, we ate her home grown tomatoes which she lovingly mailed to Tom and we devoured over a summer birthday dinner for Tammy. Then we met her when she came to meet her new grand daughter. I remember that 1000 watt smile and the sheer joy of her holding Caroline. Through the years, we remember her smile, her always warm hugs welcoming us into her family , and her complete joy at being with Tom, Tammy and Caroline. The last time we visited, Nelda marveled at her grand daughter's college graduation. She got to see the next generation grow up and her joy was infectious that weekend. We are grateful we were able to live in the glow of her kind heart through those visits. What a gift. We will miss her so much. She was a kind, warm spirit and always willing to embrace everyone. We love you Nelda. Love, Leslie, Steve and Sean Bridges

I am so saddened to hear of Nelda’s passing. I only met her at St Joesph’s when my Mom came there. Nelda was one awesome lady. I think she loved everyone and her two cats. Prayers to the family and God had received a wonderful Angel. RIP wonderful lady!
